The Boston Celtics issued a News Release stating “The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has suspended Head Coach Ime Udoka for the 2022 -23 season for violations of team policies. A decision about his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later date. The suspension takes effect immediately.”
Adrian Wojnarowski, of ESPN, initially broke the news that sources told ESPN that Udoka was facing suspension for the entire 2022-23 season for his role in an intimate relationship with a female member of the Celtics staff.
During the Boston Celtics offseason, they’ve had a star player who was injured while playing overseas and trade rumors about other star players. The team’s focus has been to be prepared to start the 2022 – 2023 season strong and in a position to make it to the finals again and ultimately win the NBA championship. Now that Coach Udoka’s suspension is official, all eyes will be on the team as they move forward without his leadership.
Whether you are a Boston Celtics fan or not, there is no denying the team's success under Coach Udoka during his first season as their head coach. The Celtics started the 2021 – 2022 season off poorly but emerged after the All-Star break to close the season with a 28-7 record in their final thirty-five games. They had an impressive Eastern Conference playoff run by sweeping the Brooklyn Nets, beating the Milwaukee Bucks in seven games, and then edging out the Miami Heat in seven games to advance to the NBA finals for the first time since 2010. Although the Celtics lost to the Golden State Warriors in six games, the season’s success is undeniable, and it was clear the Boston Celtics would go into the 2022-23 season as one of the top teams.
Before Boston, Udoka was an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets. Udoka became the fifth head coach in the past twenty-five years to reach the NBA Finals in his first season as a head coach.
The Celtics’ coaching staff includes Assistant Coaches Damon Stoudemire, Ben Sullivan, Joe Mazzulla, and Aaron Miles. ESPN reported that Joe Mazzulla will be named the interim coach. Mazzulla is a Rhode Island native from Johnston, R.I., and a graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, R.I.
In a statement to ESPN’s Malika Andrews, Coach Udoka said: "I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down. I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team's decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment."
As we wait on updates regarding Coach Udoka’s future with the Celtics beyond the 2022-2023 season, there are still some questions surrounding his suspension. If ESPN’s initial report is correct that the suspension is solely because of Udoka’s intimate relationship with a female staff member, why is his name the only one being disclosed? What is the Boston Celtics’ policy on employees having personal relationships with others within the organization, and what are the associated consequences? It would also be interesting to know if there have been findings of any other intimate relationships within the Celtics organization and how they have been handled.
As Coach Udoka begins his suspension, there is no doubt about what he has contributed to the NBA and especially as Head Coach of the Boston Celtics. However, it is more important to recognize that not only is the disclosure of the Coach’s violation of the team’s policies affecting his professional life and his team, but it also affects his family as well as the person he was reportedly involved with and her family.
