The quarterback position generates a lot of discussion in football because of its significant responsibility and influence. A quarterback must lead by example, execute plays effectively, and remember the offensive playbook to create opportunities for his teammates to score touchdowns.
Leadership
Patrick Mahomes is recognized as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, with the potential to become the greatest quarterback in history. To achieve this, Mahomes must win his fourth Super Bowl and secure three consecutive victories. As the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes has led the team to five Super Bowls in seven years, appearing in the AFC Championship game every year.
The Chiefs have the chance to become the first team in NFL history to complete a three-peat, and Mahomes could cement his legacy if they succeed. The last professional sports team to achieve a three-peat was the 2000-2002 Los Angeles Lakers. Mahomes could join the ranks of legendary athletes like Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, and Derek Jeter by winning three consecutive championships.
Backlash
For two years, Mahomes and the Chiefs have dealt with NFL fans accusing them of cheating and having referees favor them. Former and current NFL players have also called out Mahomes for flopping. This season, the media and former league players have criticized Mahomes for receiving calls in his favor to gain a 1st down or to reset a full play while on offense. Many NFL fans now say the new golden rule is that if Mahomes gets hit or tackled by the opposing team, the referees throw a flag.
During the Super Bowl press conference, NFL Commissioner Goodell dismissed the allegations and conspiracy theories that Mahomes and the Chiefs receive favorable calls. "It's a ridiculous theory for anyone who might take it seriously. But at the end of the day, it's something we always have to continue to work on, how do we make our officiating better at all times." Goodell said.
Retirement
Mahomes has accomplished a lot on the field. After tonight’s Super Bowl, what’s next for his career? How many more seasons will he continue to play? Could he walk away in the prime of his career?
In a 2024 interview with Time Magazine, Mahomes spoke about retirement. “I’ve looked, if I played until Tom [Brady]’s age, my daughter would be 19, 20 years old,” Mahomes says. That would mean missing plenty of youth sporting events and other commitments. “I would love to play that long,” Mahomes said. “At the same time, I want to be there for my daughter. If I can do that, I'll continue to play. But if I feel like it's taking away from my family time, that's when I'll know it's time to go.”
Chiefs and Eagles: Super Bowl 59
For now, Mahomes’ focus is on tonight’s Super Bowl 59 when he and the Chiefs play the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are determined not to let the Chiefs win against them as they did in 2023 for the Super Bowl Championship. All eyes will be on the officiating.
We will find out if Mahomes and the Chiefs can capture a three-peat.
